Investment into swimming pool infrastructure continues

A number of public swimming pools will close from Monday, 23 February 2026, as part of an important programme of planned infrastructure repairs, maintenance and upgrades aimed at ensuring safe, reliable and well-maintained facilities for communities.
These temporary closures form part of the Recreation and Parks Department’s ongoing investment in public swimming pool infrastructure and its five-year swimming pool programme strategy, which is now midway through implementation.
Purposeful infrastructure development, repairs, maintenance, and management form the central part of the department’s commitment and responsibility to deliver essential services to communities.
The department has adopted strategies to ensure the sustainability of its 37 swimming pools and is now midway through its five-year swimming pool programme, which has a number of phases.
Some have been completed and this includes infrastructure repairs, maintenance and improvements which will continue in preparation for the upcoming 2026/2027 financial year swimming pool season.
Two swimming pools have already closed, Delft and Bellville South.
In addition, the following swimming pools, as part of the next phase will close for the remainder of the current swimming pool season - from Monday, 23 February 2026, due to continued planned major infrastructure repairs, maintenance, and upgrades:
- Manenberg Swimming Pool
- Goodwood Swimming Pool
- Lentegeur Swimming Pool
- Langa Swimming Pool
Preliminary scoping exercises and site visits were being concluded and the final scope of works and timelines will be communicated as work progresses.
Over the past three financial years, the City invested approximately R113,5 million in swimming pool upgrades and maintenance across the metropole.
‘Our swimming pools are vital, multi-functional community hubs that promote health, safety and a sense of community. These are facilities that are well-used and are more than just a place to cool off, but we need to ensure they remain in good condition and maintained. We appreciate residents’ patience as we continue to work towards providing world class facilities for all,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.
Operating hours
The other 30 pools will remain operational until 22 March 2026, during the following hours:
- Monday – Tuesday: Closed
- Wednesday – Sunday: 10:00 - 18:00
From 23 March until 6 April, these community swimming pools will operate daily again for the school holidays, and close for the season on Tuesday, 7 April.
